Winter Walks and Outdoor Adventures

Crisp winter air and windswept open landscapes make the Lake District a haven for walkers and nature lovers at this time of year. Here are a few ideas for the Christmas break:

Enjoy a family-friendly stroll along the shoreline at Derwentwater, with level paths offering panoramic views of the lake and surrounding fells. Younger children will love spotting wildlife and skimming stones along the shore.

Aira Force Waterfall
This beautiful spot becomes even more magical in December when its woodland glades twinkle with festive lights and decorations made by local school children. Sip a warming drink from the welcome hut and enjoy a special mid-winter stroll.

Festive Dark Skies Walk
Join a guided night walk in Whinlatter Forest on 21st and 23rd December. Learn how Santa uses the stars for navigation and enjoy some stargazing (weather permitting) on this 3-4 mile trail. With star maps and guides to assist, it’s a unique way to experience the Lake District’s dark skies.
