Threlkeld Quarry Museum
While Honister Slate Mine is certainly an option, Threlkeld Quarry Museum is also worth visiting.
Much like Honister, you’ll be able to discover the history of the area and development in industrial technology at the time. Threlkeld are able to provide underground guided tours which last approximately 45 minutes (minimum age 5), they recommend you pre book during school holidays.
A narrow gauge railway is also a popular attraction to the museum, where they often operate a steam engine during school holidays and a diesel engine locomotive at other times. So it’s really worth making a visit during the school holidays for the best experience. Threlkeld is also able to show off the oldest working steam excavator that is still in use today.
If this sounds like a fun adventure out, take a further look on the Threlkeld Quarry Museum website.
Group visits can be made out of hours by arrangement. Last entry 16.00.
