Activities for Teenagers
It’s the words all parents and grandparents dread. “I’m bored!” The little ones might be easily entertained with an outdoor park or space to run around in and make their own fun but finding an activity to suit your teen is another matter.
Here we’ve listed as many teen, yet family friendly, attractions we can think of which are within easy reach of the Underscar complex.
Whinlatter Forest is on our doorstep. Less than 10 minutes drive from Underscar and you will find yourself in the beautiful mountain forest. As well as dozens of walking trails, the area is home to the longest purpose-built mountain bike trail in the Lake District. There are hard trails for experienced riders as well as 7.5km and 3.5km routes for moderate riders. The forest also houses a Go Ape treetop adventure course and zip wires for those looking for a bit more of a challenge and some exhilaration! There is now a forest Segway experience allowing you to get off the beaten track for an hour of fun.
Keswick and surrounding area
The popular town of Keswick is just 10 minutes away by car. Here you can visit the Keswick Climbing Wall, which provides other activities including a zip line, scrambling, archery, kayaking, canoeing and orienteering.
The Keswick Canoe & Bushcraft centre offers 1/2 day canoe sessions, where you’ll learn basic canoeing and paddling techniques whilst visiting bays around the lake shores and the islands. The exciting and informative day-long bushcraft experience will teach you tree and plant identification, wood collection and preparation, building shelters and lighting fires!
The King Kong Climbing Centre also features an ice wall and indoor caving. The ice wall is one of only a handful of walls of its kind in the UK. A real unique activity that is sure to challenge any fit and active family member.
The Puzzling Place in Keswick offers the brain a workout with its optical illusions and mind bending curiosities that are sure to amuse, entertain and frustrate!
The Lake District Wildlife Park in Keswick is well worth a visit and great for all the family. The park boasts a collection of birds, mammals and reptiles, including Eagles, Vultures, Emus, Pythons, Meerkats, Micro Pigs and Red Pandas.
10 miles away is the Rookin House Equestrian and Activity Centre where activities such as pony trekking and horse riding lessons are on offer as well as air rifling, archery, argo cat hire, an assault course, clay pigeon shooting, fishing, go-karts, human bowling, JCB operation, Madtrax buggies, mini quad bikes and tree climbing.
By the sea
The coastal towns of Maryport and Silloth offer some great experiences. Maryport in particular hosts plenty of activities that should lift your teens head from their smart phone for an hour or two. There’s the Lake District Coast Aquarium, the Wave Centre, complete with the Clip ‘n’ Climb wall and the Cave at the Wave indoor caving experience. The town also boasts the West Coast Indoor Karting centre. In Silloth you’ll find plenty of Amusement arcades and a BMX Track.
Brockhole in Windermere offers treetop treks where you can swing, climb, balance and fly your way through the trees. The treetop nets offer 1,500 metres of giant trampolines, walkways, slides and tunnels made out of netting 9 metres off the ground! There’s also bikes, canoes, kayaks and rowing boats available for hire from the centre and a mini golf course.
The Lakes Aquarium is in Ulverston at the bottom of Lake Windermere in the South Lakes. Well worth a visit, you can join the otters twice daily at feeding time and handle snakes and other animals.
